JK Skin Install Help

After quite a few queries and requests, I've decided to write this as a tutorial for installing the skins you download from our site.

Okay, for the purposes of this tutorial, I'll use the Elwood Blues skin (My first) as the example.

First, download the skin you want. Then, follow these steps to install it correctly.

  • Unzip the downloaded file (e.g. Elwood.zip).
  • In most cases, the Readme.txt file included with the skin will give you the name of the *.3do file of that skin. If not, you can open the *.gob file in Conman to find out. If you don't have Conman, contact the skin creator for help. In this case, it's the elwood.3do file.
  • Next, place the *.gob file in the 'Jedi Knight\Resource' directory. In this case, the elwood.gob file.
  • Then, open the 'Jedi Knight\Resource\Misc' directory and open the models.day file. (If you don't have a misc directory OR a models.dat file, download it HERE. The models.dat file downloaded here will only support the skins included in Jedi Knight.
  • Open the models.dat file using any decent Word Processor (Wordpad will do).
  • At the top, you will see the following line - numModels: 28 - Add one to this number. NOTE: This is VERY important. If you forget to add 1, the game will crash at the skin select screen.
  • Now, scroll down to the bottom of the list, and add the following line - xxx: elwood.3do ky.snd #"Elwood" - NOTE: xxx refers to the next number on the list. Also, the model name (elwood.3do in this case) can be changed to any skin you wish to install. All you need to know is the name of that particular file. And the final part, reading #"Elwood" is the name for your skin.
  • Alright, save the models.dat file, then you're ready to run Jedi Knight. Assuming this is the only custom skin you've installed, Elwood will appear just to the left of Kyle, or to the right of the team skins.

And there you have it. If you have any further problems, questions, comments or criticisms, feel free to e-mail TDO_Starbug, the author of this tutorial.

For now, happy hunting, and enjoy the custom skins.
